Bedsheets & Protective Covers Made in Germany
Transparent and sustainable production conditions are now a decisive purchasing criterion for more and more customers. However the ‘Made in Germany’ seal of approval is a subject of much debate – especially when it comes to textiles. This post is designed to give you a few insights into the production process of our brand products and explains why at Formesse, ‘Made in Germany’ is not a question of whitewashing, but an integral part of our company philosophy.
Many consumers love to buy products that are made in Germany. However often they are not given enough information to be able to make an informed purchasing decision. The ‘Made in Germany’ label is not always sufficient to allay fears. Do all parts of the product really come from Germany? Do all production steps really take place in Germany or only the final one?
‘Made in Germany’ is a statement into which the end consumer has little insight. Moreover, no clear legal provision exists to establish how many components of a product really have to come from Germany or which part of the production process must take place in Germany in order that the manufacturer can claim it is ‘Made in Germany’.
How our products are made
Our products are to a large extent made of cotton. Cotton is a wonderful raw material but unfortunately it does not grow in Germany. We source our high-quality cotton yarn from a small circle of German yarn suppliers with whom we have worked for many years.
Our cotton yarn is knitted exclusively in Germany, in the same knitting workshops that we have used for decades. The elastic jersey fabrics that are produced there form the basis for all our products.
The next production step is to process and dye the fabrics. What is called textile finishing also exclusively takes place in Germany and at a very high level of technical Expertise.
Even the labour-intensive production step of manufacturing our products – during which our fabrics are made into fitted sheets, pillowcases, etc. by sewing machine – has not been outsourced to low-wage countries. We manufacture our products either in Germany or at our manufacturing site in Alsace. We have operated this quality site on the German/French border for many decades as well.
The finished products are finally stored at our main headquarters in the upper reaches of the Black Forest, from where they are shipped to destinations in Germany, Europe and the rest of the world.
Does “Made in Germany” mean better quality?
Not only our customers, but also our suppliers, production partners and especially our employees have remained faithful to us for many years. It is their experience that makes an irreplaceable contribution to the quality of Formesse products. A traditional approach to skilled manufacturing and the associated expertise are the secrets of our outstanding quality. Our clear and stable structures are another prerequisite – because this is the only way in which we can monitor the whole process personally.
Does “Made in Germany” mean more sustainable?
As a highly developed industrial country, Germany has high social standards when it comes to industrial safety, environmental protection, etc. Many textiles companies outsource their production to less developed countries in order to circumvent these requirements.
We pursue a very different strategy at Formesse. We believe these standards to be an important achievement, encouraging us to ensure good management and high efficiency by means of the latest technologies.
Our products all carry the ‘Confidence in Textiles’ seal in accordance with the OekoTex® Standard 100. OekoTex® is an independent verification and certification system for textiles.
Is it still affordable?
Our concentration on long-term partners and Germany as a production site results in efficient processes with short transport routes and greater flexibility.
Of course we cannot compete with cut-price discounters. But that is not our intention. Our products satisfy our customers because of their excellent price/performance ratio, in other words outstanding quality at a fair price.
