The principle of water mattresses has been around since time immemorial. Indigenous peoples in various countries heated the water filled in animal skins during the day and used it as a warming sleeping surface at night, thus achieving a relaxing sleep. In today's society, joint and back pain is a widespread ailment. A waterbed can provide relief!
Although waterbeds have been on the German market for more than 30 years, there is still a certain amount of uncertainty on the part of buyers: too expensive to maintain, too complicated to set up and dismantle, too unsafe in terms of water damage in the bedroom. We have analysed the topic and collected some interesting details:

Advantages of waterbeds
Waterbeds have a unique pressure distribution that creates an even load. The water is slightly displaced in the areas with the most pressure (pelvic area) and at the same time supports the hollow areas (lumbar spine, hollow of the knee and cervical spine) - the sleeping surface therefore adapts perfectly to the body, you ‘float’ in your sleep, so to speak. Different levels of reassurance can be set to round off the customised comfort. This not only prevents back pain, but also ensures a pain-free awakening.
In addition, waterbeds with a dual system (two separate mattresses) can also be tempered separately for each side of the bed. The waterbed therefore becomes a large heating pad.
Another major advantage of waterbeds is the hygienic aspect. The cover can be removed and washed, and the vinyl surface can simply be wiped clean. Allergens such as house dust, mites etc. have no chance of settling in - perfect for allergy sufferers and asthmatics.
The structure of a waterbed
A waterbed consists of a base with a base plate. The heating element lies on top of this. There are two main types of waterbeds currently available:
Softside
- The water core lies in a heat-insulating foam tray that can be built into any bed. The foam frame makes it easy to get in and out of bed. Due to the frame, softside beds are usually longer than the usual 200 cm.
Hardside - the original form of the waterbed
- The water core is held in place all round by a sturdy furniture frame. This system is not always comfortable to get out of (you sink into the water core while the frame remains stable). Hardside waterbeds were the first systems on the market, but are increasingly being overtaken by softsiders.
- In addition to the Masterpiece bed, which combines the properties of softside and hardside through an upholstered furniture frame, there are other variants, such as Isolit (energy-saving waterbeds), Niveau (with equalising tank for different user weights) or gel beds, to which a viscous gel mass is added.
Care & service life
Good care is very important for waterbeds. Care products (conditioners) must be used regularly to prevent the formation of algae or ‘tipping’ of the water. If the waterbed is properly cared for, a service life of 15 years is not uncommon. Compared to ‘normal’ mattresses, which according to experts should be replaced every 7-10 years, this is another plus point.
Waterbed safety
The fact that waterbeds can be registered with normal liability insurance at no extra cost shows just how rare water damage caused by a bed defect is.
Heating & costs
Waterbed heaters are perfectly insulated and therefore absolutely safe. Even in the event of direct contact with water, there is no risk of damage. According to the manufacturers, concerns about electrosmog are also unfounded due to technical developments.
The cost of care products is just a few euros per year and you can expect to pay an average of 6-8 euros per month for electricity.
Design options
Waterbeds are available in a wide range of variations: freestanding, on a wooden base or colour-coordinated with the bedroom furnishings. With a high entry in a cool box spring look including topper and classic upholstered elements in various designs. Round or octagonal waterbeds can also be found in the manufacturer's extensive range. So there are no limits to the design of waterbeds!
