Respect

socially - ecologically - economically

As a family-run company from the Black Forest, we have been producing high-quality, durable products made in Germany since 1947. We have never been able to identify with fast fashion trends and textiles of inferior quality. Our love for nature is firmly rooted in us, as is our view of future generations. We are committed to a regional textile industry, the preservation of jobs and high labour, social and environmental standards.

In this section - our responsibility - we provide as much insight as possible into our corporate values and our commitment to the three pillars of sustainability. These pages are therefore not static, but will change and deepen over time.

A new statement that we have actually been living for a long time...

We have spent a long time thinking about which term best represents our values, our actions and our commitment and also fits historically with Formesse. How can we express the Formesse values and the very topical issue of ‘corporate responsibility’ honestly and authentically?

In ‘Respect’ we have found ourselves and our approach to the three pillars of sustainability.

We show respect: socially, ecologically and economically

The heart stands for the topic of social justice, as well as a tolerant, respectful and mindful approach to each other. The topic of equal rights is actively practised here in Löffingen. We can guarantee fair working conditions with high social standards across large parts of our production chain by manufacturing in Germany.

The leaf represents our commitment to the environment. We practise respectful interaction with nature in our everyday office life, on our company premises and, of course, with our products. But we do not want to and must not rest on our laurels and are always on the lookout for new ways to produce even more sustainably.

The hand stands for economic sustainability. For us, this means sustainable business practices, fair play and no corruption. Most of our direct suppliers have been working with us for decades. We help, trust and respect each other. Only through this community can we produce products of such high, reliable quality.

Short & crisp

Our contributions to greater sustainability

1947

The foundation stone for MADE IN GERMANY is laid.

Formesse is founded in the Black Forest and initially produces bed linen and other ‘trousseau’ textiles in Germany.

1985

Fast fashion does not exist at Formesse.

Exceptionally high-quality, durable and therefore sustainable fitted sheets become more and more the focus of attention, initially with the product Jersella, followed in 1992 by Bella Donna Jersey.

1997

Utilisation of our waste

Since 1997, our textile waste (edge pieces, corner trimmings, etc.) has been collected and recycled by the French company KATZ. The newly recovered, recycled blended yarn is used to make felt fillings for the automotive industry and various cleaning products such as the mop.

2004

Ökotex certification

April 2004

We have our textiles certified with the label OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100, 97.0.7666, Institut Hohenstein. This label is now one of the world's most recognised labels for textiles tested for harmful substances. With this certification, we guarantee that all components of our articles have been tested for harmful substances and are therefore harmless to health.

2004

Use of the natural cellulose fibre TENCEL™ Lyocell

June 2004

For our new product - the Satinesse Air protective cover - we use the natural cellulose fibre TENCEL™ Lyocell. This fibre is obtained from wood, which is a renewable and raw material and also has excellent heat-equalising and moisture-regulating properties. In the coming years, we will introduce further products with this fibre - BD Clima and the BD summer duvet.

2005

Baobab Children Foundation

Volker Jaschke meets Edith de Voss and since then Formesse has been supporting the Baobab Children Foundation in Ghana. An NGO that runs a youth training centre for disadvantaged children and young people. Despite compulsory education, many children still do not go to school due to financial hardship. Today, 100 pupils live in the youth education centre during term time.

2006

Our own PV-system

A large open area of the company is equipped with PV panels - totalling 1,366m². Depending on the hours of sunshine, we feed between 215,000 and 240,000 kWh of electricity into the grid each year. That is around three times as much electricity as we consume ourselves at our site in Löffingen each year.

2012

CO2-neutral parcel shipping

From 2012-2023 DPD measured the CO2 emissions of its parcel shipments, reduced them and voluntarily offset the remaining emissions by investing in sustainable CO2 compensation projects. DPD's new sustainability strategy can be found under 2024.

2013

We start environmental protection in our daily office life

March 2013

We start switching to ecological and sustainable detergents and cleaning agents, toilet paper and paper towels, office utensils and much more.

2015

Baobab Children Foundation

Formesse has been supporting the Baobab Children Foundation for 10 years now. In 2005, we sponsored three children, but since 2007 we have made a monthly contribution to this wonderful project.

2016

Paperless invoice for our customers

Our customers can now receive an electronic invoice. After some initial hesitation, around 99% of our customers now (2024) receive a paperless invoice.

2017

Green electricity and local district heating

We purchase "NaturEnergie" electricity from our local electricity provider and heat our stock & dispatch site with local heating from "Stadtwerke Löffingen".

2018

Collaboration with the Southern Black Forest Nature Park

We seek advice and design our 2,500 m2 outdoor area, including the solar panels, to be nature, insect and animal-friendly. Our large lawns are turned into flowering meadows, retreats for small animals are created, nesting opportunities and feeding places for birds are installed and our pond is renaturalised.

2019

CO2-neutral summer blanket

January 2019

Our Bella Donna summer blanket is produced and supplied in a climate-neutral way by offsetting emissions throughout the entire production chain by creating a ‘carbon footprint’.

Note: In 2023, we made adjustments and obtained ClimatePartner certification for our company and all our products.

Our outdoor area becomes even more nature-friendly. We plant 8 fruit trees and create two large areas for more natural hedges. A flower bed is also added.

2021

Switch from silk proteins to argan oil

July 2021

One component of textile sustainability is the use of plant-based additives. For this reason, we are no longer finishing our products with silk proteins of animal origin, but with the naturally based alternative argan oil.

This type of finishing achieves exactly the same effect as silk proteins in terms of softness and shine.

2021

Global climate strike

September 2021

All Formesse employees who wish to do so will be given paid leave to take part in the global climate strike.

2021

Additional compensation for CO2 emissions

September 2021

Together with the Climate Farmer Initiative, our partner Carl Meiser GmbH takes over the sponsorship of 500,000 m2 of agricultural land by converting soil management to create higher crop rotations, thereby building up humus in the soil and increasing biodiversification. 15% of our own annual emissions can be offset in this way.

2021

Reforestation to bind CO2

December 2021

Our partner Carl Meiser GmbH plants a mixed forest of 700 trees in the Zollernalb district. From year to year, these trees now bind more CO2 and compensate for a small part of the emissions caused by the colouring of our products.

2022

Launch of the organic cotton alliance initiative in India

April 2022

Formesse is involved and we are very excited about the collaboration!

2022

PV system on our office & administration site

May 2022

We have had another photovoltaic system installed on the roofs of our office & administration site, covering approx. 560m². We can use the electricity generated directly for our offices, assembly and the e-charging point.

We expect an approximate annual output of 120,000 kWh. We now produce a total of approx. 360,000 kWh of electricity per year.

2022

Bella Donna summer duvet: switch to recycled polyester

May 2022

The climate concept of our summer duvet products is based on three intricately knitted layers of material whose functions ensure a particularly pleasant sleeping climate in summer. A thin, airy polyester lining is worked into the centre between the cotton and TENCEL™ Lyocell. This is now made from recycled polyester.

2022

E-charging point

July 2022

We were able to put the charging station for our electric company car into operation faster than expected. When the sun is shining, we now charge directly with electricity generated by our own PV system.
