Quality characteristic: fibre length
Cotton’s most important quality characteristic is the length of its fibres (or staples).
- Short staple (< 25 mm)
- Medium staple (25 – 35 mm)
- Long staple (> 35 mm)
The longer the fibres, the fewer the fibre ends, the higher the tensile strength and the less likely it is for pilling to occur (little balls forming on the surface of the fabric). Every fibre end that protrudes from the yarn or fabric is an opportunity for these things to occur.
We only use long-staple cotton for our highest quality products: Bella Donna Jersey and Bella Donna Premium. For Bella Gracia and Bella Sephina, we use medium to long-staple cotton.
